Dangal is an authoritative motion picture that gives birth to a supreme class story with eloquently smooth treatment in an air tight experience remembering good vibe! The uncountable times one would get goosebumps while watching this film is the corroboration onto how inspiring it is!
To listen to advices isn't everyone's favorite, but here's a script that would make you yearn for more of it! This is perfectly possible only because of the way it's told. Everything is situational, coupled with pounding dialogues that detonate the very fact of the truths! How the Federation has spoiled the sports of India, the kind of body & food care an athlete should have, breaking the stereotypes about the capability of women, nurturing medalists with love, hard work & passion, the society's lack of support for national athletes and ridiculing the commoner's eyes & perspectives on women are the take home golds!
Patience in screenwriting is the major reason as to why this picture is polished! Even the story is such. You could sense a lot of patience. How Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) trains & develops his daughters into fine wrestlers in step by step progress forward is an example, and it is simply fantastic! With these, comes no-nonsense grappling sequences, matches & dramatic moments which auto-shifts the pacing of the show with an ideal balance to the T! The emotional heights are so right in this film that it hits you on all the correct notes & levels every single time! Very rarely in an Indian cinema do we see a screenplay following the 3 Act Structure too.
Aamir Khan is the one & only Indian powerhouse from the local industry who could call himself a true filmmaker when it comes to international standards. For one, his films like this, Lagaan, Dil Chahta Hai, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots, PK & Talaash: The Answer Lies Within are authentic, salt-of-the-earth ones. Two, characters are characters, and heroisms or longer screen appearances than necessary are nothing but unrealistic distractions toward achieving the main goal of churning out a great film at the end of the day. Three, love is not a compulsory element to be shown like a rule in every other Indian films, unless it's totally needed for the story. He is an artist who knows these by heart for many years, making it possible to bury any movies of the contemporaries like below-average entertainer Sultan or attention-seeking Mary Kom in the graveyards, in a snap of a finger.
Speaking of the actor, he has done some remarkable body transformation from fat to fit. If it was any other Bollywood stars, shirts would have been taken off and the six packs would have been flashed throughout the runtime for no reasons. But, good guy Aamir didn't even come close to undressing, and only one scene is used to cell his effort, only because it's essential for the storyline. Performances wise, he plays a dream-driven father-coach who relentlessly pursues his aims no matter the extremes with utmost sincerity! Child artists Zaira Wasim as young Geeta & Suhani Bhatnagar as young Babita did praiseworthy jobs! Fatima Sana Shaikh as adult Geeta & Sanya Malhotra as adult Babita played to the directions really carefully!
Definitely, there are a few flipsides and none of it prevented the film from being called anything less than wholesome or satisfying. Voice narration by Omkar (Aparshakti Khurrana) is disposably redundant, since the movie is performing visually excellent. Although done for increased dramatic tension & effect, it is a little artificial to witness an arrogant, inhumane Australian wrestler even though she is an opponent to our female lead. The turning point to a change of mind in the daughters to resume wrestling could have been an ounce stronger, that's all.
Pritam's music is an adrenaline shot to the veins! Humor is a bone you'd least expect to find in a serious affair as such, but it's one of the tastiest offerings in this feature. Commentators matching a brawl in office, drive against NSA's training, parallel comparisons of daughters in different environments and influences on Geeta by her academy colleagues are some of the best scenes among the rest.
The industry will miss you dearly once you're gone, Mr. Aamir Khan. Can't wait for your future outings to blow Dangal out of the water & knock it out of the park!
