Guillermo del Toro helming a superhero film? Sign us up right away!
Hellboy is the first live action adaptation of Dark Horse Comics' favorite protagonist. Three most impressive aspects of this film were the phenomenal prosthetics, practical and visual effects work. Sure, one could argue the computer graphics could have been better here and there, but the first two were absolutely flawless! Hellboy with and without horns, egg hatched inside injured arm, Abraham Sapien, Sammael, Kroenen or even the corpse guide were some of the amazing instances of benchmark! Props were well utilized too.
As a writer, Guillermo sure knew how to invoke sense of mystery, suspense, horror and awe. Under the pretense of graphic novel universe, the writer-director has crafted a rather interesting investigative thriller. The screenplay definitely was in decent quality with characters you do care about at the end of the day. Flashback of events were seamless and Hellboy's (Ron Perlman) jealousy towards Myers' (Rupert Evans) interaction with his girlfriend (Selma Blair) was sweet. Not gonna lie, this motion picture for sure had a cheesy undertone sporadically.
Furthermore, the action sequences were fantastic to say the least. Train tracks, busy road, fire outrage in Bellamie Hospital, climax maze, death traps and blow up were the highlights. Too much of obvious string-pulls for the stunts though, one must point out.
