I, Tonya is a biographical drama about one of the best American figure skaters. Through conflicting facts and contradictory accounts, we receive a stitched motion picture on our end depicting what supposedly happened in her life.
To begin with, it's arduous for Tonya Harding as she had no easy mother! Allison Janney gave a decade-worth performance as LaVona - the rebellious, stern, rough, strict, badass, foul-mouthed mom! Outstanding from the jump, not once did the actress flinch from her character's routine self! LaVona believed hardship, swearing, insults, paid insults and violence would bring the best out of her child. Hugging and kissing weren't familiar terms, although she truly did want Tonya to succeed. Maybe this is why it's hard to understand why would she attempt to audiotape Tonya. Nevertheless, we could clearly see how big of an impact the mother had on Tonya's childhood. A quick side note: Craig Gillespie's fourth-wall breaking technique in filming the interviews was nice - it’s meta, and LaVona commenting on her storyline disappearing is hilarious!
Violence has always been part of Tonya's life. Marriage was no different. Harding's mother's a saint compared to her husband Jeff Gillooly (Sebastian Stan)! The level of abuse and toxicity in that relationship was outright unbelievable. And the domestic violence portrayed here was brutal! It got too far during the gun-shooting scene. It made the major knife event at her mother's look like child's play. Crazy!
It's heartbreaking to witness Tonya's dream and hard work ruined by a third person's mistake. The Incident, teased by all the characters to build anticipation before showing the actual event as they did with the triple Axel, took a crime spin and hooked us deeper into the proceedings. Tonya's chance of winning a gold in the Olympics was forever shattered!
Margot Robbie was almost unrecognizable as Tonya Harding! She played a typical redneck, and the makeup work for her aging conditions were excellent! Not sure how long was her practice for the role especially the ice-skating segments, but those are some riveting sequences you wouldn't wanna miss! The camera capturing every inch of her movement was simply great work! Triple Axel landing feat was beautifully shot! Throughout this journey of ups and down, both in her personal and professional life, you do feel pity for her at many instances. Towards the end, her plead in court for ban removal as she didn't have an education and the only thing she knew was skating was hard for us to not bleed tears!
